| Psychotherapeutic
Services, Inc. (PSI) developed, implemented
and operates a Supervised Apartment Services
Program (SASP) in Sussex County. The SASP
is targeted to serve ten (10) psychiatrically
disabled adults between 18 and 24 years
of age who meet the admission criteria.
The project entails the leasing six (6)
apartments. Five (5) apartments are used
as housing units for two (2) program participants
each, and a sixth functions as an office.
The apartments are clustered in a one
(1) apartment complex to ensure more effective
and intensive supports. Staff provides
24-hour residential, treatment, and supportive
services. The expected length of stay
will be between one (1) and (2) years.
Following
their stay in transitional housing,
the participants will move to permanent
housing (supervised apartments) facilities
that will have varying levels of intensity
of supportive services. All housing
and supportive services will be based
on the program participants’ needs
and levels of functioning and will reflect
a high degree of cultural sensitivity.
It is anticipated that this project
will help stabilize aged-out youth,
disabled by serious mental illness and
substance abuse disorders, through the
provision of, or linking to, psychiatric
treatment, substance abuse treatment
and medical care; and will prepare the
program participants for community-based
independent living. An individually
designed service plan will be mutually
developed between the participant and
the case manager. Goals will reflect
the choices of the participants, and
the interventions offered will reflect
their level of functioning. The purpose
is to offer them “a hand up”
and create a process to enhance the
program participants’ living skill
levels and promote greater self-determination.
